Review from TRR's BookAddict-Beyond the Shadows

New review for Beyond the Shadows:

 Book Reviewed by BookAddict (reviewer)

Snippets from the review:

"...Sarah has been abused for a while through daily rapes. She begs her brother for help, which is why they are in this mess. Now that she's escaped her rapist, she needs to free her brother from Kai. Her plan is to seduce Kai, free her brother and then flee, but the plan backfires. Yes, as the reader can guess, Sarah falls for Kai. When the betrayal comes to light, Sarah is imprisoned and then punished.

...While Sarah could come off as some victimized weakling, she does not. For this, I'm very happy

...This is why I felt badly for him(Kai) when he is betrayed. I do like his dominating personality -- quite the turn on.

...One could say this means the book is BDSM because there is bondage and rough sex. I say, it's still just kinky sex with a bit of spice...The sexual tension between Sarah and Kai caused me to eye my spouse like a juicy piece of meat.

...This book moved at a nice pace with every scene meaningful. I was engaged the entire time and when I was done, I wanted more. I hope her second book covers Constantine. I want to learn more about him. I recommend this book who like star-crossed lovers who end in a happily ever after.

I've Been Tagged!

The talented and gorgeous horror writer Danielle Ferries has tagged me...and I cannot ignore it, else she might hurt me :)

Are you a rutabaga?

No. Ask me if I'm a tree.

When was the last time you ate lion meat?

Ugh. Last night, and that hunk of rawness is still sitting in my tummy like a brick.

Upload a heartwarming picture of something that makes you smile.

Seriously heartwarming. ;)

If you could go back in time and kick the crap out of someone, who would it be?

Myself. Believe me, I deserve it!

Name one habit that makes other people plot your demise.

My singlemindedness. I have the one track mind from hell.

What song would you like to be playing while you are kicking the crap out of someone?

Theme song to Barney? That always gets me good and mad.

Where da muffin top at?

Right in the kitchen beside a big tall glass of milk. That's the ONLY place dat muffin top at. Why, who've you been talking to? What do you know? It's a lie! THEY'RE ALL LIES!!!!

How many goats, stacked atop one another like Yertle’s Turtles, would it take to reach the moon?

Describe yourself using obscure Latin words.

Ego dork

Why does evil exist?

Because good does!

What the chiz are you thinking right now?

I'm thinking about this meme. I TOLD you I had a one track mind. Tricksy bastage! My Preciousssssss...

Maybe The Best Review Ever!

At least in my opinion ;)

I'm going to paste bits of it here, but please go to Scorching Book Reviews and read the entire five star review and visit her wonderfully interesting blog.

When Cassidy contacted me to review this book, I was delighted to accept. After reading Sanctuary, I knew I liked her style of writing and had already added this book to my wish list. This book, however, is nothing like Sanctuary. This book is a gorgeous romance filled with angst, intrigue and heat. I was hooked from the first mention of this feudal world and I read it in one sitting. At 154 pages, it is more of a novella, but the world building and character development doesn’t suffer one iota for the reduced length. The world Ms Hunter creates seems to be a harsh one, as the people in it need “protection” from other powerful men or woman. When protection is given, this equates to slavery, with the petitioner belonging to the petitioned. The women expected to pay for this with sex, and I respected Kai for the fact that he didn’t force himself on his charges.  When Sarah starts to threaten his reputed control, he hates himself for his actions with her.  I loved that he didn’t automatically blame her, even if he did refer to her as a “Witch” that had cast a spell over him. Yes, in case you haven’t noticed, I have found another book boyfriend :D

The sex scenes between the two characters are spectacular. There is only M/F sex featured, but it does border mildly on the kinky with a mild bit of anal play and some control/Domination. With every sex scene, you can see Kai and Sarah falling for each other a little more. The author does a fabulous job of creating scenes that suck you in emotionally, and it just makes them more erotic. In a way it was heart-breaking, as at no point did I believe that Sarah wouldn’t chose Con over Kai therefore, each time they had sex, it took them one step closer to complete heart-break.

As this is a novella, and not a short story, there are additional characters and, as per usual, I would like to see them all with stories (pretty please with a cherry on top :D) I can’t go into the details without dropping massive spoilers, but I will challenge you not to want the same. Kai and Sarah are the only fully fleshed out characters, but the others are well written enough I cared enough to want to read more. Look out for Jimbo the prisoner and Amelia the Sheriff...these are two that hooked me most!
A fabulous sci-fi/fantasy romance with engaging, tortured characters that I willed to find happiness, even if I couldn’t figure out exactly how that could happen! The story wasn’t predictable, the sex was incredibly erotic and the plot was fast paced and interesting...It’s one I’ll keep and read over and over again! This story had everything I could have asked for and more and I’ll go out of my way to buy anymore books that the author wants to write in this interesting world.

She has written much more about Beyond the Shadows, so click here to be taken to the full review.

Thank you, Nix!

After defeating the bears in Sanctuary, Kimberlyn, Logan, Andrew, and Elijah discover new passions and have a few peaceful months exploring their deep love and hot passions.

The peace ends when Kimberlyn stumbles upon a vampire who begs Logan for asylum, and Logan has no choice but to grant it. The vampire has a hidden agenda, and once he has Kimberlyn addicted to him, the wolves must keep him alive at any cost. If he dies, Kimberlyn dies.

With the vampires comes the wolves’ fifth -- and a whole new set of problems when Kimberlyn refuses to share her men, can’t get enough of the vampire, and finds new desires with this unusual addition to the pack.

With so many bodies in the bed, how can a girl not get flustered? If I had to give this story a heat level, it would be "scorching" because you cannot help but fan yourself while reading this tasty treat.

One thing that did not change was Elijah who I thoroughly enjoyed in the previous story Sanctuary, and he did not disappoint in this one. His spitfire personality really keeps everyone on their toes, which with so many characters is not an easy feat. This fiery personality ensured his place as one of my favorite characters.

Two characters that did shock me were Andrew and Logan. They seemed like different characters. Logan is no longer the strong domineering alpha who seemed like a borderline bully. Instead, he became an understanding partner who loved and respected his partners. In the first story Andrew seemed to be as much as a leader as Logan, just not the same style. In this story he seemed too submissive and sometimes got lost amongst the stronger characters. These changes were not necessary bad changes, but they left me feeling a bit puzzled because the changes were so drastic.

Asylum also introduced two new main characters to the storyline: Malik and Kali. Malik is a strong character and purposefully vague. From beginning to end, you do not know if he is one of the good people or the bad. I'm still not sure how I feel about him and will have to continue reading the series to really say if I like him. Kali, on the other hand, I quickly fell in love with. Elijah’s wit entertained me and Kali’s just added even more excitement to the mix. In addition, her unique abilities as a Methuskein added an extra paranormal element, which I appreciated.

The sequel to Sanctuary may have some of the same characters, but took on a life of its own. Not only were some of the characters a bit disconnected from the storyline from Sanctuary, but so was some of the overall feel of the story. I got the feeling I was missing a story in between the two because so much changed. It made me want to go back and reread the first story, just to make sure I wasn't forgetting things. It felt as if the author recognized the mistakes she originally made and corrected them in this story, but it left me a bit disconnected because of it.

The writing style of this story read very smoothly. With a story involving so many characters, I was worried I would get confused as a read. Instead, I was able to easy tell each character different personalities and keep up with the actions including in the bedroom. This is something I really commend the author on. She even incorporated small details like different nicknames from each of the main characters to make you understand which was speaking.

Still, the story was able to stand on its own and even added a little more than the first story, and for that, it was an enjoyable read.
